My QuickBooks Story

I once read a story about a couple going home from a therapy session. During the session the wife complained about the husband being self-centred and always thinking and talking about himself, and never share any credit with her. As they were walking towards their car; the husband feeling a bit remorseful, was thinking of patching up things with his wife. And to open the conversation he said: ‘Darling, I want you to know that I deeply appreciate everything you are to me.’

Wife: ‘here you go again! ‘I’, ‘I’ , ‘me’ all you think about is yourself.
Well, I am going to talk about myself. My QuickBooks Story.
Me
I love QuickBooks Accounting Software. I love it because it helps businesses succeed and help accountants to sleep well at night. If your spouse is an accountant or CFO you will understand what I am talking about. My love for QuickBooks accounting Software stems from my love for Systems Thinking. Systems Thinking help us accomplish tasks that are seemingly complicated. A car is a type of system. Its many parts contribute to help you achieve the task of transporting your family and luggage over long distance in comfort and in style - all in good time.

After finishing my O’ Level exams – I was what you would say and average student – for some reason, I got this notion in my mind that I want to pursue ‘computer accounting’. This was in 1995, when people were studying DOS in order to operate a computer. I did not even understand the scope of what I was dreaming then. But the dream stuck with me. In due course, I finished my studies in Corporate Governance and management sciences: information systems, economics, business and corporate law, accounting, operations management, professional administration, etc.
Meeting QuickBooks
My first encounter with QuickBooks accounting package was in 2004 when I found myself in Malawi with Children of the Nations (COTN). My assignment then was to set-up the office administration and financial management systems for COTN International. After being in Malawi for a year it was time to transition our financial management system from excel base into an suitable accounting package. We chose QuickBooks and i have never regretted the choice. During this transition period COTN was also expanding its operations and constructing its National headquarter facilities. To help with this seemingly herculean workload, the international office provided me with a resource person in the form of a 70+ something year old lady with over 40 years accounting experience. We worked side by side for twelve months (six months at a time). Suffice it to say the accounting and QuickBooks training I received during this period was invaluable. Prior to this I had completed Professional examinations in both Financial Accounting and Management Accounting, but none of these had prepared me for the intricacies involve in the financial management of a business or an organisation that is continuously evolving.

Working With QuickBooks
Since then, I have moved on, obtain a Master’s degree in Finance. Worked for business and non-profit organisations; lead project teams in government and development partner projects; conduct systems and financial management strengthening assessments; worked with capacity building agents in the business, entrepreneurship and non-profit sector (i.e. Graca Machel Trust – Women Creating Wealth Program & Seagal Family Foundation – Social Impact Incubator Program)

Helping Others With QuickBooks
In the past few years as I interact with business owners and accounting professionals I began to notice the gaps that exist within many businesses and organisations. The following are some of the key ones.
  1. Accounting system not closely aligned to the operations of the business
  2. Accounting professionals who need training in order to serve the financial needs of management.
  3. Frustrated CEOs and directors not receiving timely reports from their accountant
  4. Delays in preparing month-end accounts and report summaries
  5. Special transactions not being processed for lack of technical know how
  6. Having an accounting package and yet processing transactions manually or using MS Excel
  7. Accountants and financial controllers not asking for help until situations get worse
Today nearly all my client’s story involves a combination of two or more of the above.

Do More With Quickbooks is a service I provide for businesses and accounting professionals who value the need for a healthy financial management system.

A healthy financial management system
  • helps accountants to be their best without stress
  • provides timely reports and accounting information to all stakeholders
  • has the expertise to process all types of transactions involved in by the business
  • able to generate all the reports need by management
  • is a good investment
In short this is my story.
If you find it informative and are thinking of having a conversation please give me a call or drop me a line.

Best wishes and thank you kindly.
